We often find ourselves caught up in the commotion of life, feeling restless, anxious, uneasy, questioning, answering, contemplating, and not at our soul’s “home”. It is not a pleasant feeling and more often than not we find ourselves conveniently blaming our surroundings, work, relationships, stress, etc. I have been there several times, when everything around me is going just fine, logically, I know that ‘this is life’, ‘things will be okay’, etc. etc… but my heart and soul are on their own trip of this yucky unsettling feeling, craving long gone peace, and center-ness. Over the course of last few years, I have learnt a few techniques which help me ground (a fancy spiritual term for having the mind body soul aligned) which I am going to share hoping one of them might help you too!!
- Grow Roots : Inhale deep with closed eyes or lowered gaze, and inhale some more, and then imagine roots growing from the bottom of your feet, from the end of your spinal cord, and from each body part which is in contact with the ground; keep seeing these roots go deeper and deeper into the Mama Earth, and right before you were about to collapse because you were being pulled so powerfully, feel another root growing from the top of your head and is being pulled by the Moon. Feel your spine lengthen and feel the support from above and below. Let that energy flow from the moon, through your body, to the center of the earth for a few minutes!
- #AttitudeofGratitude: This one never fails! Step outside, and with every step think out loud a thing you are grateful for, and take 100 such steps. During this exercise, go small, we all are grateful for the big things in our lives- family, friends, job, love, health, etc… but challenge yourself to go deeper and feel grateful for all the small little things- a friend made you smile? the steps you are taking? your feet/knee/hips working in perfect alignment for you to walk? grateful for these shoes which are protecting your feet? or that comfy comforter or pillow? the funny conversation you had with your security guard? that money to put gas into your car? your car which takes you everywhere? access to private/clean bathrooms? that lock on your apartment door (a normal thing for you, eh? but a luxury for a homeless!)? … the list is endless! 100 steps will be over before you know it and your heart will be so full at the end!
